Previous elections were almost cooked by Conservative candidates "speaking their mind" particularly on social issues, where many of them do not hold the opinions of the majority. Too careful? Perhaps. Necessary? Absolutely. Does it breed distrust? Definitely, but I think they'll happily deal with distrust over an explosive public debate on abortion, the death penalty and other fringe religious beliefs.
